Student organizations work hard to give back

Aurora University student organizations are responding to community needs this holiday season and are providing opportunities for students, faculty and staff to make a difference.

Sigma Delta Gamma will be collecting money for the East Coast and donating all profits to the Red Cross.

Cans Across the Conference Drive
Now – November 20

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee is conducting a canned food drive, and all cans will be donated to a local food bank. Donation boxes are placed in Alumni Hall, Dunham Hall, Eckhart Hall, the Institute for Collaboration and Phillips Library.  The committee is also accepting monetary donations from individual athletic teams.

Fox Valley Troop Support Boxes
Now – November 20

Members of the student organization F-PEC (Fitness, Physical Education, and Coaching) in conjunction with Fox Valley Troop Support, will be collecting various items for Thanksgiving care packages to send to U.S. troops overseas. Drop boxes are located in the Dunham Hall Atrium, the Institute for Collaboration lobby, Eckhart Hall and Alumni Hall.

Requested items: Peanut butter (20 oz or less), jelly (plastic 20 oz or less), crackers (standard 14.4 oz box), beef jerky (no Slim Jims), nuts (20 oz or less plastic container), Pringles (tall canister), granola bars, mints, Ramen Noodles (flat packages), raisins, dried fruit, trail mix, canned meat (tuna, chicken, turkey), tuna lunch kits to go, floss, toothpaste, eye drops, mouthwash (3 oz or less plastic containers), hot hands, Q-tips, hand sanitizer, CDs and DVDs (new and used).

Winter Boots Drive
Now – November 30

Sigma Delta Gama is conducting the Winter Boots Drive and all items will be donated to Hesed House in Aurora. Look for the collection boxes in the Dunham Hall Atrium, Institute for Collaboration lobby, Spartan Spot, Eckhart Hall (first floor) and Alumni Hall (café lobby).

A.R.I.S.E Book Drive
November 26 – December 3

Awareness, Respect, Integrity, Sisterhood, Empowerment (A.R.I.S.E) will be conducting a book drive in honor of National Literacy Month. Boxes will be placed in Dunham Hall Atrium, Eckhart Hall (first floor), the Spartan Spot and Institute of Collaboration lobby. Please come out and help collect books for those who are in need of them.

Socks for Tots
November 27 and 28

A.R.I.S.E will be having their annual Socks For Tots event. This event allows students to show their creative side by decorating socks for toddlers and young kids. Donations are accepted and will go toward the purchase of the socks. This event will begin Tuesday, November 27, and will end Wednesday, November 28,  from 8:00-9:00 p.m.

Crayons for Kids

Dunham Hall Atrium

AU Students for Wellness has been collecting crayon donations for the past two months. The officers will be melting down those crayons into holiday shapes. The holiday-shaped crayons will be available for students and staff to purchase in bags of three crayon shapes for $2 each. $1 will go to AUSFW and the other $1, along with the crayons, will be sent to a children’s hospital of their choice. Students and staff will have the option to write a note to the child who will be receiving the crayons purchased.
