The Aurora University Spartan women’s indoor track and field team captured the 2013 Northern Athletics Conference Championship in impressive fashion on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. AU finished with 226 points, winning by 117 points and never trailing the meet after the opening event.
AU had numerous impressive performances on the day which saw the Spartans wrap up the Championship quickly and run away with the win.
44 individuals or teams (relays) scored points on the day with 22 of those Spartan individual or teams bringing home a medal (top three-finish).
Spartans won conference championships in five events, the 5,000 meter (C.J. Houlis), 400 meter (Liz Canaday), 200 meter (Liz Canaday), triple jump (Ciara Marlow) and the 4×400 meter relay (Marlow, Caitlin Monigold, Lena Palmer and Canaday).
Canaday set an AU record in the 200 meter with her winning time of 26.67 and in the 400 meter run with her winning time of 1:00.18. She scored 20 individual points and another 10 as part of the 4×400 meter relay team.
Hinson competed in four events for AU on the day, scoring 24.5 points, finishing second in the 55 meter hurdles (9.10), second in the triple jump (10.54m), third in the shot put (10.92m) and tied for fifth in the high jump (1.41m).
Freshman Ciara Marlow, who a week and a half ago was playing for the Spartan women’s basketball team scored 16 individual points and another 18 as part of the 4×400 meter and distance medley relay team. She won the triple jump (10.54m) and finished third in the 400 meter (1:02.72) and finished second in the DMR (13:32.39) and won the 4×400 (4:15.37).
Junior C.J. Houlis accounted for 18 points as she won the 5,000 meter with a time of 18:48.10 and was second in the 3,000 meter with a time of 10:49.60.
Next action for the Spartans comes on Friday, March 1 when they compete in the Last Chance Meet at Carthage College. Meet time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
