AURORA, Ill. — Aurora University senior defensive back Justin Gibbons saw his dream of getting a chance in the NFL come to fruition the evening of April 29 when he agreed to an undrafted free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
“We are extremely excited and happy for Justin as this has been his goal, and he has been laser-focused the entire time,” said AU Football Head Coach Rick Ponx. “I am sure he will bring that attitude into Indianapolis. Justin exemplifies our mission for all of our AU students: Discover what matters and build your life around it. For Justin this is another building block on his journey to the NFL.”
With agreeing to the contract, Gibbons will report to the Colts rookie minicamp in a few weeks with the goal of further impressing the Colts organization and sticking with the team.
“The whole experience has been surreal but I am focused to work hard to earn my place,” Gibbons said. “I know they drafted two corners during the draft so I know I have to work extra hard and be ready to roll when the rookie camp arrives.”
Gibbons had 30 tackles in 2016 for the Spartans with three pass break-ups as he spent time at corner back and wide receiver. In 2015, he had 28 tackles with five interceptions and 12 pass break-ups.
“I am grateful for the coaching staff at AU for all the time and preparation they put in to preparing me for this journey,” said Gibbons. “I cannot say enough about Coach Ponx for believing in me from the very beginning. I am eternally grateful for this experience, it’s something I will never forget.”
The 2017 Aurora University Spartan football team will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 2 when they host Carthage College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Vago Field.
