Mu Sigma Pi organization plans second annual Hoops for Hope event at AU
Mu Sigma Pi, a service learning club for pre-health professional students at Aurora University, will be hosting its second annual Hoops for Hope event on Thursday, March 14 at 11:15 a.m. in Thornton Gymnasium. The club, which works to promote physical, mental and spiritual health throughout the community, has invited the Hope D. Wall Rockets Special Olympics Basketball Team from the Hope D. Wall School in Aurora to participate in a game against its club team, which includes Mu Sigma Pi members and members of the AU faculty and staff.
“Mu Sigma Pi particularly interacts with senior citizens and individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities,” said John Lloyd, Faculty Advisor to Mu Sigma Pi and Professor of Biology. “This event will be beneficial to everyone; giving the Hope D. Wall Special Olympic athletes an opportunity to play on a university basketball court, and helping AU students obtain insight into the life of a special needs individual.”
In addition to the game, there will be a raffle for prizes and a half-time fundraiser, “Pie a Professor,” where AU students will have the opportunity to pie faculty and staff faces. The money raised will go to support future Mu Sigma Pi activities.
Mu Sigma Pi stays active, giving back to the campus and surrounding communities throughout the year. In February, the club helped implement the annual AU blood drive, organized a Valentine’s Day celebration for patients at the Provena McAuley Manor and volunteered as judges at the Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School science fair.
Mu Sigma Pi is also involved with an after-school STEM science project, where members teach and implement various scientific activities with students at three local middles schools. The health themed project focuses on the digestive system, nutrition and carbohydrates in the diet in reference to diabetes. The AU led venture began back in February and will continue throughout March and April.
Later this month, the Mu Sigma Pi members also will assist with the AU Athletic Training Organization 5K Walk/Run at Oakhurst Forest Preserve on March 24 and volunteer at the annual Lions Club Easter Pancake Breakfast at Luigi’s Pizza on March 30.
