For Meaghan Coltharp, BS ’10, MBA ’12, the journey to becoming an accountant wasn’t strictly about learning to crunch numbers and analyze data. It was a wide variety of classes and different professional development opportunities at Aurora University that helped shape her career as a staff accountant with Mathieson, Moyski, Celer & Co. in Wheaton, Ill.
Coltharp loved the AU atmosphere. From the small class sizes, the professors and AU events, everything fit with her personality and interests. She credits AU with always having something fun and educational happening.
“My advice to any accounting or business student is to go to as many AU professional events as possible,” said Coltharp. “Even if you don’t think it fits your career path, go! Networking with different clients, employers and fellow peers from all walks of life will help your future career.”
As a staff accountant, Coltharp is assisting with auditing, reviewing and collections of financial statements for profit, not-for- profit, and government entities, as well as assisting in tax return preparations.
“AU prepared me for my career by having professors who not only received an education in accounting and business, but they also had experience working in those fields at one time or another,” said Coltharp. “My professors helped me understand concepts better by relaying their real world experiences in classes. I’ve remembered their stories and applied those lessons to my own career.”
