Ed Howerton named Assistant to the President for STEM at Aurora University

Aurora University announced today that Dr. Ed Howerton, who serves currently as Assistant Director of the School of Education at AU, has been named Assistant to the President for STEM. In this role, Howerton will lead the next phase of development of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on the AU campus and ensure that all is ready for the arrival of students in August.

“I am honored to welcome another outstanding public school educator to our STEM team at Aurora University and look forward to working with Ed closely in the months to come to ensure that we realize the full potential of this innovative science and mathematics education venture,” said Aurora University President Rebecca Sherrick.

Howerton is an established public school leader who served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources at West Aurora School District 129 before joining AU earlier this year. He holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois at Chicago, a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in education from Aurora University.

“I am very excited about working with students and teachers in this unique learning environment. The collaboration between AU, the public school districts and corporate sponsors to develop a school that utilizes a curriculum grounded in real-world situations is a construct that should serve as a model for other schools,” said Howerton. “The work done by Dr. Sherrick, Dr. Eagle, Ms. Sherman and others on the team to move the Dunham STEM School from conception to reality is remarkable. I am fortunate to be joining such a dedicated team.”

Howerton joins a team of experienced public school, university and corporate partners engaged in the STEM initiative over the past four years. In his new leadership role, he will consult with Allison Sherman, the founding director who has spearheaded curriculum and development of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School.

“It has been my pleasure to collaborate with the dedicated team of partners to design the strategic plan for the opening of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School,” said Sherman. “With the efforts currently underway and the strong leadership brought by Dr. Howerton, I am confident the school will meet the vision shared by our founding partners. I look forward to witnessing the growth of this transformative model in STEM education.”
